Catalan President to go on trial for ‘disobedience’

The Catalan president, Quim Torra, will go on trial for ‘disobedience’ on 25-26 September at the Spanish High Court in Catalonia (TSJC).

The reason for the trial is for not removing signs (including yellow ribbons) in support of the jailed and exiled Catalan leaders from public buildings during the latest electoral campaign season, as requested by the Spanish electoral authority (JEC).

The public prosecutor has requested that Torra be banned from office for a year and 8 months, as well as receive a fine of €30,000.

This would mean that the Catalan president could be ‘de facto’ sacked, like his predecessor Carles Puigdemont, but by the judiciary and not the Spanish government.
