The world of Egyptian pharaohs arrives in Girona

The lost world of the Egyptian pharaohs has arrived in the Catalan city in Girona. This CaixaForum exhibition, previously shown in Barcelona, is staged in collaboration with the British Museum.

Running from 20 February to 25 August, the show is called ‘Pharaoh: King of Egypt‘.

Visitors can admire some 140 pieces from the British Museum, ranging from fine gold jewellery to monumental statues and carved reliefs from temples. Through these pieces, it’s possible to understand more about what the Ancient Egyptians leaders wore and the rituals they performed, along with the civilisation’s administrative organisation.

Many other exhibitions about Egypt focus on ‘pyramids and mummies’, said the head of the Girona museum Ana Colomer, whereas the CaixaForum display instead aims to show how the life of the rulers really was, and the different roles they filled, from religious to military leaders.

The collection’s ‘objective is to understand who a pharaoh was’, and ‘go beyond the myth’, said Marie Vandenbeusch, one of the curators of the exhibit.

For example, the statues the rulers built with different crowns depending on whether it was for Upper or Lower Egypt, or the giant temples they had constructed to which only a select group of people were allowed access.

Ana Colomer foresees the display being a success: CaixaForum Girona’s most-visited exhibit to date was one on Egyptian mummies in 2014, drawing over 75,000 ticket-holders.
