CaixaForum Madrid welcomes Toulouse-Lautrec show

On 20 February, CaixaForum Madrid inaugurates its latest exhibition, an exploration surrounding the work of artist Toulouse-Lautrec.

The exhibition also features many of his contemporaries working in the booming, bohemian Parisian neighbourhood of Montmartre in the latter part of the 19th century.

Toulouse-Lautrec and the spirit of Montmartre‘ features over 350 paintings, posters, drawings and illustrations that capture the creative ambience that came to the fore in that part of the French capital at the time.

Along with Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec, artists such as Édouard Manet, Pierre Bonnard and Édouard Vuillard were part of a movement that found its expression in cabarets, theatres, cafés and on local streets.

Montmartre at the time was a marginalised, sometimes dangerous area. It started to attract writers, musicians and actors, as well as artists, drawn by its cheap prices and alternative lifestyle compared to the typical bourgeois parts of Paris.

Together they created a creative community that laid the foundations for an enduring and unique artistic legacy.

When: 20 February to 19 May
