Avant-garde artist Josep Guinovart under the spotlight

Catalan avant-garde artist Josep Guinovart, who died in 2007, is the focus of a new exhibition opening on 24 January at Barcelona’s Espais Volart venue that’s part of the Fundació Vila Casas.

Entitled Transformed Reality, the show re-examines the work of Guinovart and highlights his continued influence thanks to the timelessness of the pieces he created during his career across the second half of the 20th century.

As the name suggests, the show also explores Guinovart’s ability to change reality while also reinventing himself.

While the works on display come from different periods, they aren’t arranged chronologically but rather zig zag between techniques, materials and eras.

The Fundació Vila Casas is dedicated to contemporary Catalan art, which it showcases in its five venues that are all housed in historical buildings; three are in Barcelona (Espai Volart and Espai Volart 2, and Museu Can Framis), and two in the Costa Brava (Museu Palau Solterra in Torroella and Museu Can Mario in Palafrugell, which focus on photography and sculpture respectively).

The foundation was set up in 1986 by pharmaceutical entrepreneur Antoni Vila Casas.
