Barcelona’s Phenomena cinema opens weekend of horror

Barcelona’s Phenomena cinema today inaugurates its Festival Phantasma IV Horror weekend, with a full programme of terror, gore and fear scheduled for the next four days.

Fans of horror movies can enjoy screenings of 20 films, all in their original language, between 29 November and 2 December with classic productions such as The Village of the Damned (1960), a British sci-fi horror about a place where numerous strange children are born on the same day.

There’s also Hellraiser (1987) about a man called Frank who manages to open a portal to Hell, and Possession (1981) starring Sam Neill as a husband who hires a private investigator to find out why his wife is acting so strangely.

‘The Fury’, a 1978 supernatural horror movie directed by Brian De Palma and starring Amy Irving and Kirk Douglas.

Also on the programme are this year’s The House that Jack Built, from director Lars Von Trier and starring Matt Dillon and Uma Thurman, a psycho grindhouse double bill featuring Eaten Alive (1976) and House III (1989) – and werewolves and the military on screen together in Dog Soldiers (2002).

Phenomena started life as a itinerant cinema experience, but in December 2014 it moved into the former Cinema Nàpols, retaining the venue’s classic style combined with the latest screening technology and an eclectic selection of original version films.

When: 29 November-2 December

Where: Phenomena Cinema, Sant Antoni Maria Claret, 168
