Bilbao Guggenheim opens new show from Diana Thater

The Guggenheim Bilbao inaugurates a new exhibition on 29 November, a solo show from US video artist Diana Thater.

Entitled ‘A Runaway World‘, it focuses on one of the key themes that regularly appears in Thater’s work: an interest in the condition that different animals live in as a result of human activity.

This show features twin video installations that were recently produced in Kenya and look at two species under threat of extinction, rhinos and elephants, and highlights the illicit economies that undermine their very existence.

The first, ‘As Radical as Reality’, explores the efforts by guards to protect the world’s last living male northern white rhino from poaches. The protagonists of the second, ‘A Runaway World’, are a group of bull elephants.

Diana Thater, born in San Francisco in 1962, has been at the forefront of the video art movement since the early 1990s, using new technologies and colour manipulation to create her work.

She incorporates traditional characteristics from different periods in art history, from Impressionism to Minimalism, while also exploring key aspects of contemporary culture.

Thater also takes great care with the presentation of her works, employing special lighting techniques and different display methods to precisely achieve the ambience she seeks.

When: 29 November – 18 March, 2019
