80% tickets sold out for south Europe’s scream park

Horrorland, south Europe’s first ever “scream park,” has already sold 80% of its 22,500 available tickets months before it is due to open its doors.

The Halloween-based theme park will be in operation on weekends and holidays from October 11 to November 17 in an industrial estate in Cercs, northern Catalonia.

It will give employment to a total of 125 people. Its temporary site is fitting – next to an abandoned power station.

Economic impact

The mayor of Cercs has highlighted the benefits for the local economy that Horrorland will bring. “It is a big impact that is very important for us,” said Jesús Calderer.

Some of the main attractions include haunted houses, escape rooms, outside shows, and interactive games designed to spook. Horrorland also has its own mascot: a Beetlejuice-like character called Mortimer.

One of the haunted houses is based on the derelict power station looming over the site where visitors will find freakish mutations inside ready to give them fright. More attractions will be revealed over time up until the grand opening.

The companies behind the first park of its kind in southern Europe, Horror Box and Insomnia, have expressed surprise at how fast tickets have been sold, despite it being a temporary attraction. At the start of June, half of all tickets had been bought, prompting organizers to consider extending the project.
